FAB-Gallery presents:

The Art of Milton Bautista
August 22 – August 24, 2019

FAB Gallery, 2001 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405
Phone: 310.630.216 | Email: fab@bisciotti.com

Milton Bautista was born in Marcala, La Paz, Honduras, on August 20, 1986. He is a teacher of Primary Education, graduated from the Escuela Normal Mixta Guillermo Suazo Córdova of La Paz.

He has thirteen years (2006-2019) of artistic career, and has his own workshop in Tegucigalpa. He has exhibited in different cultural spaces in Honduras, the United States, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

His painting is in collections and private galleries of San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. This year his program includes new exhibitions in the United States and Nicaragua.

PRESENTATION

Ramón Caballero – Independent curator of visual arts.

Substantially, painting is color, with the addition that history brings in each moment, in each style, in each work. Milton Bautista wants to penetrate this pictorial substance, making it a saying, saying it as a do. And instead of answering the question, what is painting? he does it in front of a very different one, how is painting done? This is how B autista has been working on his images for more than a decade.

Attached to color, this artist entertains his fantasy in a clean world, with wide, bright and pasty colors, which reveal that joy does not lie in the concept, but in the expression. Of course, color, to signify, needs to give us an appearance. It is then that Bautista brings his own substance: his own joy of living, of working, of dialogue. It is then when the painter t akes the color to the boundaries of the portrait, the scene and the landscape, sometimes to face the smiling or dreamy gesture of the character, and sometimes to suggest that the dialogue is in the community.

It is here when the art of Bautista fulfills its moral functioning, turning his work into a means of defending life. When judging by color, the artist’s signals are of respect, charm and hope. Of course, the painter’s own experience will take it further. But the foundation will remain there: love of color love of life.

INTERCULTURAL: Sheinina Lolita Raj

INTERCULTURAL

INTERCULTURAL Worldwide is inspired by racially charged experiences and the evolution of ancestral lineage in our new global community.

In 1891 during the British Raj era my great great grandmother a young girl of six years old played on the beach in Goa, India. A British soldier approached her and offered candy, which she accepted as a kind gesture. He then offered her more although gestured that she must follow him as there was a stash of candy to be had on his ship. Lured by the sweetness, innocently she followed him. Once on board the soldier lead her into a shipping crate where he sealed the entrance and trapped her. She lived in this crate for a month sailing along the oceanic route from the west coast of India to the South Pacific Island of Fiji. Anchored in the Port of Lautoka she was taken to a sugar cane plantation where she continued life as a slave. There she met my great great grandfather a nine year old boy also a child slave who had been kidnapped from India.

Generations had passed on the colonized island of Fiji when in 1963 my father a young boy and grandmother were officially recognized as British subjects when they boarded the Southern Cross bound for Great Britain.

Landing at the infamous London Docks they were not welcomed by all in the motherland. Racism was prevalent in London during this period. My father was beaten often by skinheads who disapproved of his settlement.

Despite a lineage of deplorable relation my father fell in love with an English woman. Therein lay the genes that spawned my life in the country known to modern man as the United Kingdom.

My name is Sheinina Lolita Raj, a person who was born from distinctively diverse ancestors, culturally, religiously, linguistically and physically.

Racially speaking I am half Indian and half English. I do however consider myself Canadian. Believing in the promised land of Canada my parents immigrated to Vancouver when I was five years old, hopeful that I would enjoy a peaceful life free of prejudices. We said farewell to loved ones for good.

Although, the truth is you cannot run from racism.
Mankind has evolved to visually interpret their environment, a survival instinct ensures individuals are categorized.

When the color of my skin presents an unfamiliar reference, inevitably a barrier of discriminative notions are formed.

In honor of cultural diversity, INTERCULTURAL Worldwide reflects just how different yet the same we are.

Adorned in the worldly traditional regalia of India, Pakistan, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, Armenia, Eritrea, Jordan, Iran, Morocco,, Saudi-Arabia, Mexico, Brazil, Native America, Hawaii, and North America, the collection of self-portraiture unifies authentic heritages.

Art serves as a universal language.

As cultures around the world collide INTERCULTURAL could not be present at a more precarious time for humanity. I intend to break the barriers of disassociation that is due to the lack of knowledge, awareness and understanding of cultural ideologies. It is my wholehearted intention to unify humanity with respect to diversity so we may all live with one another in peace.

Flavio Alejandro Bisciotti: Objects From The Ashes

Flavio Alejandro Bisciotti & FAB-gallery presents:
Objects From The Ashes

and the documentary PALIMPSEST-VENICE,
a film By Felipe Martinez Carbonell

This is a solo exhibition of Flavio Bisciotti and a continuation of the highly successful exhibit Palimpsest. FAB-gallery 2001 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405.

The opening reception will be open to the public Thursday, June 8th, 2017, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Exhibition dates: June 8th through September 3rd. Gallery viewing hours by appointment.

Palimpsest emerged from the devastating fire that took place in Flavio’s home studio, early the morning of January 5, 2016. While looking over the charred remains of his studio, Flavio had an epiphany. Spurred by a desire to breathe new life into the remains of things that had meant so much to him, he decided to invite artists to take anything from his studio that they were drawn to and recycle, reuse, and reinvent to produce new artworks. Flavio decided to turned destruction into a community outreach so as to fuel creativity. Over 32 artists, local and international, participated, bringing their creative spirit to Flavio’s artifacts. The artists took cameras, singed paintbrushes, bits of old wood, scorched clothes, and even Flavio’s burnt artworks and created new art that inhered the history of the old and told a new story of collaboration and creativity.

Flavio’s art is all about functionality. His inspiration comes from his training as an architect and designer. A true craftsman, Flavio brings together artfulness to all his objects. He blurs the line between sculpture, installation and functional objects such as tables, chairs, and even chandeliers. His furniture takes on sculptural quality. With Flavio’s creations the observer can live in and amongst the art, effectively inhabiting an installation. Flavio elevates the everyday object to the status of art.

In this particular series Flavio expands his creative boundaries. Rather than merely creating artful objects, he has reinvented himself by elevating his past into a new story. He has reexamined and found new functions for and a new beauty in his old works. One of the works on view is a glossy modern plexiglass chair that also incases the ashes of his former studio. These items can now rest interred while providing a place to sit and ponder. Another piece takes the form of a dining table in which broken China and cutlery are embedded, polished and partially hidden like fossils in a stone. This old history now hosts new guests and create new memories. Like geological or archeological layers of land, these artifacts within artifacts become the layers of a life.

**The exhibition will launch Flavio’s new web site flaviobisciotti.com and Palimpsest-Venice.com as well as displaying artwork from: Torquato De Nicola, Jennifer Verge, Alexandra Dillon Rohitash Rao, Tori White, Photoghaps by: Debbie Zeitman and Felipe Martinez Carbonell.

Money in the Eyes: Alexander De Cadenet

FAB-gallery presents: Money in the Eyes.

For his first show in Los Angeles, British artist Alexander de Cadenet presents an exhibition that calls attention to society’s obsession with material wealth and explores the relationship between wealth and the spiritual dimension in art . The opening public reception will be held on May 4th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Exhibition dates: May 4th through June 4th. Gallery viewing hours are by appointment . FAB-gallery is located at 2001 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405.

“Money in the Eyes”

For his first show in Los Angeles, British artist Alexander de Cadenet presents a series of ‘Life-Burger’ sculptures, castings of human skulls with silver dollars in their eye sockets and a new addition to his skull portrait photographic series.

Money in the Eyes (close up), Bronze, unique edition, 2017

Inside a series of bronze McDonald’s burger buns are stuffed the accoutrements of wealth and status – classic Ferraris and Bugattis, Lear jets, Rolex watches and Barbie dolls. Using a totemic sculptural form, each ‘Life Burger’ is topped with a sacred symbol – a reference to the origins of art such as animals drawn from the earliest cave paintings, a seated Buddha or a human skull.

Buddha Burger, Bronze gold plated, unique edition, 2015

As Critic and Historian Edward Lucie Smith wrote in a recent monograph on the artist published in 2016 by Unicorn Press:

“The Life Burgers seem the culmination of the artist’s journey towards a full engagement with society, offer a commentary on the vanity and essential self-deception of contemporary urban society, with its lust more pronounced than ever in its upper reaches – for expensive toys”.

“The Life Burger sculptures combine two opposing functions: they offer a sharp criticism of the society we live in and yet simultaneously they are luxury objects in their own right”.

Veyron Burger, bronze casting gold plated, unique edition, 2015

Exhibited for the first time, the Life Burgers shown in Los Angeles include The Veyron Burger, The Skull Burger, The Buddha Burger and the solid silver Trump Burger, a multi-faceted reading of the Trump phenomenon and celebrity culture in America today.

De Cadenet states, “At their root, these works are a search for a deeper meaning in art. They are born out a cultural hero system in which, as Ernest Becker states in his 1973 text ‘The Denial of Death’, ‘people serve in order to earn a feeling of primary value, of cosmic specialness, of ultimate usefulness to creation, of unshakable meaning…by building an edifice that reflects human value, a temple, a cathedral, a totem pole, a sky scraper or a family that spans three generations…The hope and belief is that the things man creates in society are of lasting worth and meaning, that they outlive or outshine death and decay, that man and his products count’”.

Skull Burger, polished bronze casting, unique edition, 2015

To coincide with the opening of this exhibition, the artist will also launch a new website, www.newvisionaries.com, as a platform for a community of artists who see their artwork as a portal to a deeper dimension of existence and wish to offer spiritual or philosophical insights into life today through their art. The exhibition will also coincide with the publication in Mind Body Spirit Magazine of Part 1 of the artist’s interview with spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle on the subject of ‘Art and the Spiritual Dimension’. A meeting between the artist and Tolle in Vancouver in 2016 inspired the development of the New Visionaries platform.

De Cadenet is best known for his x-ray photographic “Skull Portraits” of celebrities and famous historical subjects, including portraits of King Richard III of England, Pharoah Tutankhamun, Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. His previous projects and participations include exhibitions and displays at the Victoria & Albert Museum (1998), Museum of Modern Art Ostende (2001), Courtauld Institute of Art (2003), Tate Britain (2006), Beijing Olympics (2008), and Museum of Torrance (2012).

Time Travel: Jung Yun

FAB-gallery presents: Time Travel
An exhibition of of new paintings by Jung Yun.
FAB-gallery  2001 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405.
The opening public reception February 18th 5:00 to 9:00pm
Exhibition from February 18th to March 18th, 2017
Gallery viewings by appointment.
In his new paintings Jung Yun expresses the experience of time through light and color. Yun plays with our perception of light and how it affects our concept of time, within his paintings and in their installation. As we move through winter and spring, days grow longer and light changes in quality and intensity.   Our perception of season is affected by light as much as anything else; depending on the time of year and the part of the world we’re in, we can experience the core feeling of “season” through light’s intensity or overtones. This may be even more influential to our notion of the seasons than is temperature.
In this series Yun creates a sense of space, vastness, and environment. He has taken this body of work a step further by creating a complete environment. “Time Travel” is thus an integral installation as well as an exhibition of new paintings. By altering our perception of his paintings through manipulation of the gallery’s lighting Yun can affect our perception of the time of day or season, and therefore our basic perception of time.

Delia Cabrai –Santa Monica February 2017

Jung Yun is a Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles. He is the founder of the multidisciplinary artists group, laGoon Collective. Traveling around the world, he continues to investigate and immerse himself into physical and digital mediums.

Bogdan Dumitrica – September 17, 2016

Bogdan Dumitrica was curated by Delia Cabral and Flavio Bisciotti.

The exhibition dates were from September 17, 2016 to October 14, 2016.

Please scroll down for images from the exhibition.

Fab-Gallery presents Bogdan Dumitrica: Everybody Has the Right to Wear a Mask.

Bogdan Dumitrica’s paintings “Everybody Has the Right to Wear a Mask” investigate the concept of metamorphosis and disappearance. The objects from the paintings are hybrids with their own traits, which resulted from the juxtaposition of elements of the collective human culture as well nature. Masks were used in rituals including those of passages, their main purpose being to cover the real identity of the person who through the use of the mask becomes somebody else. In Bogdan’s paintings this ancient tradition of masks is brought into the current times due to their resemblance to the existing, common objects such as football helmets or welding masks that are meant for protection against aggressive forces. These masks borrow features of different textures from nature as a symbol of transformation under the influence of time. The metamorphosis of human objects into organic elements explores the idea of the temporality of human existence, the senselessness of violence and race divisions in a space that conforms to the laws of peril in time.

Delia Cabral , Los Angeles

Artist’s statement about the new series:

I finished the series “Everybody Has the Right to Wear a Mask” about a year before I read The Map and the Territory by Michel Houellebecq. I was so moved by his book that I did something I have never done before. I wrote to him on his website. I did so even though I did not think he would answer (“Peu importe,” as he would say.)

I will quote the last passage of the book, which so beautifully sums up the subject of these paintings.

“The representations of the human being (…) disintegrate under the effect of elements then they decompose and scatter around in tatters, seeming in the last videos to become the symbol of the human species’ generalized disappearance. They sink, seem to struggle for a moment before are engulfed by the tangle of plants. Then everything calms down, there is nothing left but the grass moving in the wind. The triumph of the vegetation is complete.” ”.

Bogdan Dumitrica is an artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. For the past several years he has been working on large scale series of oil paintings on paper that are instilled with symbols taken from nature while exploring current social issues. In the series “Everybody Has the Right to Wear a Mask,” “Fearful Symmetries” and “El Dorado” the music of contemporary American composer John Adams is the source of inspiration. Dumitrica received his Master of Fine Arts from California State University, Los Angeles. He is the recipient of an Art Matters Foundation Grant in 1995 and awards such as First Prize the Second City Council Long Beach 2001, Honorable Mention, 1st Biennial of Ceramic, Ichon, Korea, 2001, Ink & Clay 25 Purchase Award, Cal Poly Pomona, 1999, and First Annual Riviera Fine Arts Center Competition, 1994. Dumitrica’s works

were included in the 1st World Ceramic Biennial 2001, Ichon, Korea, The Fifth International Biennial of Ceramics, Cairo, Egypt, and have been shown in solo as well as group shows in galleries around the United States and Europe. http://www.bogdandumitrica.com/

High and Dry – August 13, 2016

High and Dry was curated by Delia Cabral.

Date for the show was from August 13, 2016 to September 2, 2016. Please scroll down for images from the exhibition.

High and Dry is the first of a series over art exhibitions I will be curating at Fab-gallery upon my return back to Santa Monica after being based on the east side of LA for 5 years.

High and Dry is a summer exhibition that explores Horizons in the visual arts.   I wanted an exhibition that explores our our relationship with the boundary between the heavens and earth. I wanted it to be clean, simple and beautiful. There are three artists: Osceola Refetoff, Sabine Gebser and one painter,  Tori White. They show us the horizon in unexpected ways,  from up high,  to wide open and dry to saturated and stunning. Osceola brings us his “ Arm chair in the sky” series, a series  that shows our familiar world from an unfamiliar vantage. Sabine creates rich images with kaleidoscopic horizons and presents her pictures in an unusual round format and Tori captures a wide open feel in her small format paintings. All and all, these three artist bring a fresh perspective to perspective.

PALIMPSEST: ART FROM THE ASHES

On January 5, 2016, a fire burned down Flavio Bisciotti’s home art studio. The loss included his personal paintings, photographs and ephemera, furniture, objects, tools, materials, clothing, files, and things he had collected over his lifetime. After the initial shock and after speaking with friends, he came up with the idea to salvage the remains of the fire to create new artworks. Flavio has curated art exhibits in the past that has involved local artists. His idea for this exhibition is a collaborative community effort where the participants are able to make art,to strengthen their relationship with fellow participants.

Flavio Bisciotti is a multi-faceted individual with several deep areas of interest. This includes his artwork, and also his company Bisciotti design+build and his championing of artists through his art gallery, FAB-gallery in Santa Monica.

Flavio Bisciotti

We featured the artwork of Flavio Bisciotti.

As a visual artist, Flavio creates paintings and functional art. He is influenced by Latin artists such as Wilfredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Carlos Alonso, and Antonio Berni. The subject matter of Flavio’s own work is driven by personal encounters and by the urban environments he travels to. The spectator of his work is also a catalyst for his evolution. Exploration of materials and a collage process that includes ephemera he has collected over the years, as well as, ideas from earlier sketchbooks leads to work that is a dialogue between his past and present self.
